Wow… I was rendered speechless after watching this episode. The first few minutes shows Mirai’s first contact with Izumi, followed by Akihito waking up with Mirai sleeping next to him. Next is happy scenes of Mirai and Akihito together. It seems that Akihito is safe. Mirai successfully killed kyoukai no kanata without killing Akihito. Happy conclusion? Not really. As much as I was happy seeing them together, something seems off, so I was holding back from feeling any joy or relief.

My suspicion was proven true. Almost the entire scenes in the first half of this episode is not real. It all happen in Akihito’s head while he’s unconscious after Mirai stabbed him. Mirai did stab him and she did kill kyoukai no kanata without killing Akihito. But there’s a big fact she didn’t say earlier: she disappeared in the process. The “Mirai” in front of Akihito is just what’s left of her, as a result of her blood is still inside Akihito.

So Akihito wakes up, this time for real. And this time Mirai is not sleeping next to him. Only her glasses is there. Because the real Mirai has disappeared from the real world.

The second half of this episode is a big revelation that everything from the beginning of first episode is already planned by Nase Izumi. Izumi contacted Mirai before Mirai’s first encounter with Akihito. Izumi already told Mirai that Akihito is kyoukai no kanata and Mirai’s mission is to kill him. So, Mirai knew all along about Akihito’s true identity. Yet she got close to him, to the point she can no longer kill him. Then, it was Izumi’s move again to force the youmu-side of Akihito to take over so Mirai can kill kyoukai no kanata.

Izumi told Mirai that there’s a way to kill kyoukai no kanata without killing Akihito, but Mirai will be consumed by kyoukai no kanata and disappeared if she choose to do this. To be fair, Izumi did warn Mirai that what Akihito would want is for Mirai to kill him and survive. Mirai knows, and fully aware of her choices. And she choose to sacrifice herself to save Akihito.

This episode really plays with our feelings. I mean, after last week’s final scene, I have made TONS of guesses of what could possibly happen this episode. But NONE of those scenario include the fact that Mirai disappears. So, as much as I salute the writer for making a plot totally unpredicted, this is a very sad episode. I really hope there would be a miracle next week.
