Ai the 12-year-old Gravekeeper.
Ai’s step-brother.
Ai’s step-mother.
The last undead villager.
Ai, our heroine, became an orphan when her mother died when she was 7. She never met her father, she only know that her father’s name is Hampnie Hambart and one day he will come to meet her.
In this anime’s world, humans no longer stop moving when they die. They still move, and walk, and talk, almost normally. It all started 15 years ago. People said God has abandoned the world on Sunday, and humans can no longer die or reproduce. No babies, and “dead” people becomes walking undead. If you imagine zombies, you’re wrong. These undead don’t attack people (at least for this first episode). They can still “live” their days and do normal things just like living person. The only way for a person to truly “die” and rest in peace is when he’s given a proper burial by a “Gravekeeper”.
Ai’s mother is the village’s Gravekeeper. When she died, village people asked Ai to become their new Gravekeeper. A lady named Anna took Ai as her daughter, and for years Ai lives normally, with love from a “family” (a step-mother and step-brother).
One day Ai meets a mysterious guy named Hampnie Hambart, but he insists he’s not Ai’s father and Hampnie Hambart is a fake, made-up name, taken from a toy. Next, she realizes that everyone in her village is dead. And the only possible person to kill them all is this mysterious man.
So, is this Hampnie Hambart a mass-murdered? Apparently not. Turns out, the entire village (except for Ai herself) has died for a while. And this Hampnie guy travels from village to village to make the undeads stop moving and get a proper burial. Then who is Ai and why the entire village hide the fact that she’s the only living person there?
