A robotics club with only two members is trying to build a giant robot from a TV series GunVarrel. The time setting of this anime is 2019, not too far in the future. Basic problems of physics are still serious issue here. A giant robot will be too heavy for ordinary motors to move. To move robots, several movement motors needs to be installed, and each of them will require considerable amount of energy, making it a major problem for a robotics club in high-school level.
Our main heroine, Senomiya Akiho (Aki) is a highly energetic girl, trying hard to prove herself to be acknowledged by her older sister, Senomiya Misaki. Our main hero, Yashio Kaito is an expert player in a highly popular online robot fighting game called Kill Ballad. Kaito is also Aki’s childhood friend and have met both Senomiya sisters since long ago. Their robotics club eventually gets new members. Hidaka Subaru is a champion of robot fighting tournament (not a game, actual mini robots build to fight). Furugoori Kona (Koujiro Frau) is a genius girl and the maker of Kill Ballad. Daitoku Junna is a girl who is afraid of robots. Interesting combination? Indeed they are. By chance, Kaito discovers what might be a major conspiracy about some experiments. Several hidden notes written by Kimijima Kou describe about some confusing stuff he never heard of, thus he decides to collect all the hidden notes to find out the truth. But as usual from anime with semicolon titles, there’s always interesting twist waiting for us as the story progresses. Character-wise, I like Frau rather than the main couple. Certainly hope they will make a new anime based on her as main character someday, just like how Misaka Mikoto from To Aru Majutsu no Index gets her own anime series (To Aru Kagaku no Railgun). Duhuhuhu~. Robotics;Notes is the third anime series from 5pb “science adventure games” (their titles can be easily recognized from the semicolon in the title). If you haven’t, you probably want to check out Chaos;HEAd and Steins;Gate. Remember the little daughter of Mr. Braun (Okabe’s landlord) in Steins;Gate? She’s back in this anime, now age 20 and working for JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, Akiho’s father also works there). Nice story about believable future, evil conspiracy and how humans are helplessly manipulable by news media. Really love the second ending theme. Recommended for all ages. My rating : ★★★☆☆ Seiyuu
