Anime First Impressions: Spring 2013

Karneval

karneval-fi

Some people with special abilities vs monsters. Our hero believes that he’s just an ordinary human. But he has a gift of hearing things a moment before it happens. There’s a group called Circus, consists of people with abilities, this group seems like a government institution, or at least controlled by some people in the government. So I would expect there would be some politics as well.

The world setting is rather “gloomy” and needlessly violent for my taste. The fighting scenes is ok, but the characters are lack of charm. I will probably watch few more episodes before I can decide whether I will watch or drop it. Definitely will not blog about this.

Hataraku Maou-sama!

hataraku-maou-sama-fi

Another version of Yuusha (hero) vs. Maou (demon lord). This time, the demons are actually evil, and they actually starts a bloody conquering battle. Humans strike back under Yuusha’s leadership and manages to defeat Maou (male) in his own castle. Maou escapes to a portal with one of his general. Turns out, the portal takes him to a modern human world. In modern world, magic doesn’t exist, thus Maou and his general look like normal human, and they lost their magic.

Maou and his general decide to adapt to human world in order to survive, while looking for a chance to revive their magic and return to their original world. To my surprise, Maou’s adaptation level is quite good. He works for a burger restaurant and soon having himself behaving like a normal human. By the end of first episode, we get to see Yuusha, who somehow also ends up in modern world, and Yuusha is a girl !

Not bad for first episode ! I had fun watching this. Will keep watching and start blogging about this title.

Ginga Kikoutai Majestic Prince

ginga-kikoutai-majestic-prince-fi

Outer space setting with futuristic war. This is the typical team-of-five heroes who start from the bottom. While the basic idea is just too classic, I like the battle scenes and the characters. We have wanna-show-off-and-can’t-do-team-work person; a simple guy who just want to be a sniper, a chubby girl who is so easily fall in love to any good-looking man, a pervert cartoonist leader, and another girl whose personality is not clear yet.

I will most probably continue watching this. But no plan to blog it for now.

Suisei no Gargantia

suisei-no-gargantia-fi

Another space themed anime. Set up in distance future where humanity had long left Earth and live in other planets. Episode 1 starts with a great war between human race vs some unknown entity. Our hero is just a soldier serving for a decisive battle. Things doesn’t go as planned and he was ordered to retreat. Something wrong happens, he lost consciousness and wake up 6 months later in a mysterious place with very primitive technology: Earth.

I like this anime. I like the vibe. Waking up in a ship, on a planet he only heard as “hinted in history as the origin of humanity” will surely start something interesting for the story. Will watch this. Will consider to blog about it.

Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru

yahari-ore-no-seishun-love-come-wa-machigatteiru-fi

An anti-social boy and a super smart-and-popular girl who doesn’t have any friend. A nice combination I would say. Forced into a club by a teacher. And now they have to help other students with problems. Yeah right, logic and common sense is not a must in anime, it’s something optional. And what’s with this popular theme lately about hero with no friends? Does young Japanese people find it that difficult to make friends?

I will watch this anime, just for the sake of having some good laugh and light story.

Aku no Hana

aku-no-hana-fi

Probably the worst anime this season. I don’t even have enough strength to finish watching the first episode. The art is super ugly. The animation quality is crap. Immediately dropped.

Zettai Bouei Leviatan

zettai-bouei-leviatan-fi

A very lighthearted anime. Set in RPG-like world. Our heroine is Leviatan, a mage who controls water (as the name suggest, of course). She’s waiting for her long lost older-brother to return home. The first episode seems to be an introduction about how she met her companions: Jormungand, Bahamut and the always-hungry-fairy Syrop.

Simple story, got me laughed few times. Will give it few more episodes before I make a decision about this one.

Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai 2

ore-no-imouto-ga-konnani-kawaii-wake-ga-nai-2-fi

OreImo is back ! Better and cuter than ever ! Glad to see Kirino in her “usual” style again. Nice to see Kuroneko gets a bit moe now. and Ayase is still as yuri as ever.

As for the story, Kyousuke is not feeling good about Kirino returns to her usual self without any changes after the “big” incident by end of season 1. Kirino is trying hard to amend for her change of decision (for not leaving to US) to her classmates, to her clubs, to her agency. Just when Kousuke thinks Kirino might not him to give “life counseling” anymore, Kirino drags him to… Akihabara. And as we can see, Kirino is still the same Kirino we love, a true otaku of anime and younger sister eroge.

Without a doubt, I will watch this.

Photokano

photokano-fi

A high-school boy who happen to have good relationships will many popular girls in school gets a new camera. A hand-me-down from his father. He was excited with his new toy, trying to capture good pictures using his camera. Soon he gets scouted by Photography club. Basically club with shady people, bunch of perverts. Right next to the club room is Photo Club with only two female members.

As you can guess, this is our dose of harem for this season.

Shingeki no Kyojin

shingeki-no-kyojin-fi

A bunch of titans are eating humans. And humans are so powerless all they can do is run, hide, and build a town with high protective wall around it. Which, obviously by the time those titans find the location of the town, that protection wall is not going to do much. Not my taste. Dropped.

Haiyore! Nyaruko-san W

haiyore-nyaruko-san-w-fi

Nyarlko is back ! Another second season that I highly anticipate for this season. As much as this title always entertain me, I always had difficulty in describing this anime in words. Will surely watch, but will not blog about this.

Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge

dansai-bunri-no-crime-edge-fi

A boy with weird obsession (to cut hair). A girl with strange curse (her hair can not be cut). Fate brings them together. I laughed so hard during first half or episode 1. I mean, anime world has shown me various unimaginable settings before, but hair-cutting? Now that’s something new.

Turns out, the boy is a descendant of a famous killer. And the scissor he received when he was little is the murder weapon. And that scissor is the only device capable of cutting the girl’s cursed hair.

Strange but interesting. This anime catches my interest and I can’t wait for next episode.

Namiuchigiwa no Muromi-san

namiuchigiwa-no-muromi-san-fi

A mermaid who casually can walk and breathe on land, talks to a boy who like fishing. A silly story, yet this silly me still decides to follow this one.

DATE A LIVE

date-a-live-fi

Spacequake. Instead of earthquake causing destruction from inside the planet, this one brings us a new concept: spacequake. Same destruction, but the source is originated from outer space. Our hero is a normal boy (yea, very original) with a loving imouto (younger sister). One day, a spacequake detection alert instructs everyone to underground protection. Our hero decides not to go to shelter because he’s worried about his sister who is still on the surface, waiting for him in a restaurant.

And so he bravely goes on rescue mission. Then the spacequake happens. Now here’s the twist. The core of the blast from the space creating spacequake is… a girl. Yea, right, why I’m not surprised here. Even better, a squad of flying girls with weapons are trying to kill the new girl from space. One of them is our hero’s classmate. Our hero fainted during the battle, and find himself in a strange room when wakes up. To his surprise, his “innocent” imouto is the commander of the squad to battle those spacequake girl to save Earth from destruction. And this imouto commander gives our hero a new task: to play a dating game. Lol what? I had exactly the same thought. The dating sim explains that another way to prevent destruction other than killing the spacequake girl is by… make her fall in love to our hero.

Again, must remind myself, in anime world, logic and common sense is optional.
With that in mind, I’m ready to watch this anime to the fullest ! Nyahahahaha.

Uta no Prince-sama Maji Love 2000%

uta-no-prince-sama-maji-love-2000-fi

A sequel. The art quality is not as bad as Aku no Hana. But this type of one-girl-with-many-beautiful-boys story is never my taste in the first place. I didn’t watch the first season and have no plan to watch this one either. Immediately dropped.

Arata Kangatari

arata-kangatari-fi

Two men of identical face (and same name) from different universe switch places. In our modern world, Arata is a bullied high-school boy who lost trust in anything after his only friend denies being his friend in front of bulliers. In the magical world, a man is accused of killing the leader. It’s actually a coup, planned by 12 elite guards of highest position serving the leader. But they don’t want a new leader is chosen according to some sacred ritual, they want to hold the power themselves.

An interesting first episode. I was not too sympathetic with the main hero, but I guess that’s how most hero stories started. Will watch this one and consider about blogging about it.

Yuyushiki

yuyushiki-fi

Three girls doing cute stuff with almost no storyline. Just random stuff. The art quality is average, but still gives us our decent dosage of moe. Will watch, but will not hope much from it.

Devil Survivor 2 The Animation

devil-survivor-2-the-animation-fi

A mysterious mobile app that will show a video clip of how someone dies, right before it actually happens. Our heroes are two boys and one girl. The two boys say a clip of each other’s death scene in an underground train station, and they’re actually there. In an instant, the accident they saw in the clip becomes reality. Right before they die, the app gives them the option to live. When they took the offer, their phones immediately download something. A monster to be summoned.

Our male heroes plus that one girl who happened to experience the same thing (choosing the die or live options) now help each other. While the actual cause of that accident is not clear yet, it is hinted that this is more than just a story about a train accident. Nice thrill, good vibe. This one has a good potential. Will continue to watch, and maybe will even blog about it.

There are still 2 more anime in my radar. The first one is Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Bride, haven’t had time to watch it. The other one is To Aru Kagaku no Railgun S, a long-awaited sequel of one of my favorite anime of all time, hasn’t aired yet.
